I have been extensively involved in all aspect of finance and accounting since 1994.
Initially as an articled clerk the focus was on accounting, auditing and taxation of companies involved in various sectors of the economy. Thereafter I moved into financial management and system design and implementation. I performed this role for a company in the hospitality industry in Zanzibar as well as a gold mine in Tanzania.
On my return to South Africa, I joined a multinational as corporate finance accountant, where my primary duties included valuation of international subsidiaries, determination of the impact of external factors on group profit and benchmarking the group against international competitors.
As finance manager at a project management company, I put these skills to good use in compiling financial models for fund raising for various projects. I became involved in contract negotiation and drafting in addition to running the finance department. These skills were honed at my current position where, in addition to running the finance department for the South African operations of a multinational, I was responsible for managing private equity investments on behalf of the company from initial screening, appraisal, contract negotiation through to exit. These investments were made in terms of an offset (or countertrade) agreement with the South African government.
In my private capacity I have an interest in investing and have completed courses relating to investing on the JSE as well as a course on commodity options and futures on the American markets.
While in completing articles in Cape Town I was a sea-going member of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) at their Hout Bay station. I qualified as an advanced PADI scuba diver while in Zanzibar and tried my hand at sky-diving in 2008. |
